See a ‘Human Tower’ team from Spain in NYC

(USA TODAY)

UPDATE: 8:43 p.m. ET Wednesday: The Spanish team formed a wedding cake-like human tower of eight tiers, reports publicist Lanny Grossman. “They did it perfectly.”

Earlier we reported that the 150-member team is in New York to try to set a record for a “human tower” and to display its skills for locals and tourists.

The team builds a human pyramid called a “castell” without using ladders or nets. The rehearsal photo at the right says it all.

The Spaniards from Catalonia planned to go for a world record Wednesday night around 8 p.m. at the 23o FIFTH rooftop bar in Manhattan. They’re hoping to beat the Guinness World Record of six tiers. Admission is free.

The “Castellers de Vilafranca” also will show off the 300-year-old tradition of building human towers in Central Park and Battery Park for the Make Music NY Festival on Thursday.
